FOM/Math I Syllabus 2016
The purpose of the Math I course is to formalize and extend the mathematics that students learned in the middle grades. This course deepens and extends understanding of linear relationships, by contrasting them with exponential and quadratic phenomena, and by applying linear models to data that exhibit a linear trend. In addition to studying bivariate data, students also summarize, represent, and interpret data on a single count or measurement variable. Progressing from the geometric experiences in the middle grades, students explore more complex geometric situations and deepen their understanding of geometric relationships, moving toward formal mathematical arguments. The Standards for Mathematical Practice apply throughout each course and, together with the content standards, require that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations. Successful completion of this course requires a passing score in the class and a Level III or higher on the state mandated Math I EOC. This course counts as one of four math credits required for graduation.

Rules:
- Be prompt, be prepared, and be polite
- Must have Greenwave Hall Pass to be able to leave the classroom (20/20 Rule applies)
No food or drinks in classroom with the exception of water in a closable container - All school rules outlined in the Ashbrook Student Handbook will apply
- 3 ring binder or 3 spiral notebooks (one for each 6 weeks)
- Loose-leaf notebook paper
- Pencils/highlighters
- Calculator (if you have your own)
- Tissues/ Hand sanitizer
- Headphones
- Math 1 is an EOC testing course. The EOC will be given at the end of the semester and students must pass the EOC to pass the class. The EOC will count 25% of the final grade. The final exam for FOM is teacher made and counts 15%.
- Tests: 60%
- Quizzes: 20%
- Homework/Classwork: 20%
- Make up work is your responsibility!
- Check with your teacher to see where missed work is kept and get the notes from a peer.
- Sign up for group tutoring if needed. (see below)
- If you missed a test/quiz, you have one week to make it up. No exceptions.
Tutoring:
- Morning tutoring is offered Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays starting at 7am (just ask your teacher for a note).
- You may come in after school for extra help every Tuesday and Thursday (3:05-4 pm)
- You may stay with any FOM/Math 1 teacher for extra help and to make up missing assignments.
- You will have homework most nights to turn in the next day (practice problems and/or videos to watch). The videos are linked to the Math 1 website (ashbrookmath1.weebly.com)
- Please let your teacher know if you cannot access the internet from home to watch videos.
- Students will be assigned a workbook at the beginning of the semester. Students are not allowed to write in the workbooks and must put all work in their interactive notebooks. You are responsible for the workbook and must turn it back in at the end of the course. Failure to do so will result in a $6 charge and must be paid to the school. Students may purchase a workbook for $6 and at that time will be allowed to write in it.
- Homework will be checked for different types of grades – completion and accuracy.
- Homework questions will be reviewed the following day. Make sure to ask questions!
- Late homework will receive a penalty, so be sure to have it with you when you walk into the classroom.
- If you need to leave the classroom for any reason you must have your Hall Pass (limited to 6 passes per grading period)
- Do not interrupt the teacher while speaking or teaching to ask to leave the classroom – wait until after the lesson.
- 20-20 Rule applies (students not allowed to leave the first or last 20 minutes of class)
